The Challenge

NatureSweet, the #1-selling snacking tomato brand, faced a paradox: produce is a commodity category where consumers trust their own senses — they can smell, squeeze, and inspect a melon or avocado before buying — but packaged produce asks shoppers to trust what they can't touch.

Despite category leadership, brand awareness lagged badly behind package recognition; consumers remembered the “yellow bottom” or the Cherubs® sub-brand long before they recognized NatureSweet as the company behind it. As the company expanded into cucumbers, peppers, organic, and conventional lines, that gap threatened to become a structural weakness rather than a marketing footnote.

Our Approach

Starting in 2018, NatureSweet began putting the faces of real Associates directly on 10oz Cherubs® packaging, paired with a “Food ID” tracker disclosing origin and the company's vertically integrated model — an invitation for consumers to see exactly who grew and cared for their food.

The initiative doubled as the company's highest form of internal recognition: peer-selected Associates from facilities across Mexico, Arizona, and San Antonio earned a spot “under the label,” a distinction that came to be honored industry-wide, including for retiring grocery executives. Between 2018 and 2024, three classes of roughly 18 Associates each — selected for good standing and embodiment of NatureSweet's values — became the face of a brand sold across North America.

The Outcome

The campaign generated three times more consumer compliments than complaints and unprompted requests for more Associate stories, with some consumers “collecting” faces under the label.

It became a genuine competitive moat — no other company in the category could replicate NatureSweet's vertical integration or willingness to put its people on the record — and retailers responded with increased distribution, treating the visible quality standard as a safeguard against costly recalls. That foundation of consumer trust is what NatureSweet retained VENNtion in March 2026 to protect and extend, as Lori now supports the company's public affairs and external communications strategy.
